The Importer's been kind of blowing up? So please, if anyone can jump in there so I can submit my own (comparatively unimportant) questions and have a reasonable chance of being answered before even more of my hair turns grey, that would be awesome.

I would imagine LJ being hyper-vigilant now. If they're really a company that wants to turn a profit, a mass migration like this is death. And yet to save their integrity, they'd need to seem like the objective party. So if they can write ToS that make it seem that DW is a this rogue party that is an illegitimate site, then they would seem to be the better company despite the OH SO MANY woes. My entire feed has just been full of LJ news.

Also, the dw_tos (private) community has seen a spike of activity. I imagine the dw staff is quickly trying to figure out a position to deal with LJ's response. It must be a nightmare for a bunch of part-timers.

>> Lotsa euphemisms for "not anti-LGBTQIA" - gotcha.

Definitely not. LJ is a poor service compared to DW's non-ad and pro-security stance. :/

>> so I'm not entirely sure where you were going with that?

It's entirely subtext.

LJ moved its servers to Russia for legal reasons. They're showing that LJ is following the law (though it's Russian law), which insinuates that sites like DW are not. DW does still carry the livejournal brand in its software.

By following Russian law rather than American, the company expresses that it's more important that they follow Russian law than sell the company. They're willing to make a costly investment in monitoring, legal write up of the entire ToS in Russian, and physically move the servers rather than sell the company.

Something's up. Not sure what.

>>> Probably starts with a P...

Right?

But why LJ? Why not VK and m(ai)l (dot) ru?

I suppose those brands are tainted with their history. VK with piracy and m(ai)l (dot) ru with hacking. Does P really think simply grabbing another social media brand for propaganda is going to work? Especially when LJ isn't even a useful propaganda platform. It seems designed for individualism.

I hope it's a wasted effort.

>> All part of the plan, I'm sure.

You're certainly right. Social media is a market that some state (if not all) powers want to regulate.

I enjoyed your evil dictator impression. :^)
